On 7th December 2007 in Bruneck at 06.30 p.m.
Traditionally on December
St. Nicolaus walks through the cities and villages to
admonish and laud the
young and the
old. His companion, the so called Krampus, is an
evil figure who
punishes the
bad children and
adults on St. Nicolaus’ command.
The Krampus is known in most German speaking parts of the Alps. He causes
fear and
horror and especially children are afraid of him. However,
St. Nicolaus and
Krampus simply stand for the
good and the
evil. The children are scared at first because they see the ugly faces and hear the rattling and the bells. In the end they are happy because good St. Nicolaus gives them
some presents.
More than
300 Krampusse take part at the annual parade in Bruneck which has become part of our
tradition.
Thousands of visitors watch the parade each year, when the Krampusse walk down the main city lane to the “
Graben” and the “
Kapuzinerplatz” square leaving from the upper part of the town, the “
Oberstadt”.
Go back in time when the ugly and
frightening creatures, who look like
devils, capture the town centre.
Rattling,
bells,
devils’ carts,
fireworks,
fire-eaters and lots more create a unique atmosphere with their wild show in the early darkness of the evening.
This particular custom is an additional special event during the
pre-Christmas season together with the enjoyable
Christmas market!
